The REAL Story (so far)
"REAL is a heartbeat: a wink; a kiss; a smile; a tear; a hug. REAL is two hands holding; a single idea; a dream; a fire; a sea; a girl; a guy; a song; a season. Being REAL can’t be written in words, there is no manual on how to be REAL. If we exist we are REAL."
Erin & Jean Young, 2007
Our Mission
Our mission is to build a generation of young people who celebrate and respect diversity; enabling young people to lead change in the world.
The Beginning of REAL...
REAL was born in 2007.
Creators Erin and Jean Young grew up in rural Victoria in a tiny place called Stanhope. Having experienced the impact of poor body image and witnessed many girls (young and old) who didn't love their bodies, the sisters recognised that when a young person feels good about themselves - they are more capable of making positive change in the world.
In 2007 the first edition of REAL Magazine was published with the support of the Rushworth Community House.
The pages of REAL Magazine were filled with ideas, challenges, achievements and artworks of young women from across the world aged 12 - 25 years old. The publication aimed to share real stories that connected and supported young women to celebrate diversity, whilst respecting their own bodies and minds.
The publication was distributed to Victorian Secondary Schools. Four editions of REAL have since been published, featuring the works of over 150 young women, and distributed to over 10,000 girls worldwide.
What We Do...
The REAL Team continues to work in partnership with several organisations, artists, individuals and educational institutions to facilitate innovative mediums that honestly reflect the ideas, challenges and experiences of young people.
Our team includes the open-minded & brilliant Felicity Kane, the intelligent & creative Melissa Wallace, an extraordinary writer & passionate advocate Markeeta Waddington, the dedicated & empowered Jane Hosking and sisters Jean & Erin Young.
Our belief is that all people; young, old and in-between are powerful beyond their means; uniquely beautiful and intriguing; intelligent and able; and posses the ability to inspire others and change their world ... the first step ... it to simply be yourself :)
